What is trail mail?

  • A trail mail is a series of emails that can be sent on the same day or in chronological order.

A trail mail is a very effective way to keep reminding someone about the last conversation that you have with him/her. E-mail is a very effective tool to accomplish this. The ability to respond to emails facilitates a great deal of communication between people.

If you send an e-mail once in a while, then it becomes easier for you to attend them and communicate with them on your next visit.

However, if you send numerous e-mails like this, then it becomes harder for you to stay connected with them even if they are serious enough to trust you enough to open up the e-mail and read it at some point soon after it was sent.

In fact, many email service providers have become more active trying to increase their revenue by increasing the number of e-mails they deliver per day.

An email trail or thread is an email message and a running list of all of the subsequent replies pertaining to the original email. Getting back to your question, mail can be considered a mass noun (much like sand, rice, and money), meaning that it can be tricky figuring out when and when not to pluralize the word.

If you are asking in the context of a long term hike for a month ot more. Trail mail is mail which has been sent to you at a or several preplanned addresses. Whether it’s a a local post office on hold to pickup. A lot of people do it this way spending a day off trail to wash clothers and refit. Also, the very long trails that you may hike do have small shops, beds, in which mail can be sent there and you do not have to leave the trail. Look on the web for the trail in which you want hike and find the placse which is best for you to pickup mail and packages.

Trail mail can also be note/letter you leave in the log book for your buddies to pick up should they be following behind you. If there is no logbook just stick it on one of the many nails in the shelter.

I hope this is what wanted to know. Happy hiking and hike more.

Since your question is in the HIKING forum, I’ll answer relative to hiking.

Trail Mail, also called Bounce Boxes, is a method many people who hike the Appalachian Trail (AT) use to forward items of need or to resupply in nearby towns as they hike through. They can pre-ship food, gear, batteries, etcetera to hostels, businesses or post offices that are near the trail. This allows them to send themselves supplies they will need along the way instead of carrying everything.

Somewhere online there is a list of all the businesses and individuals who will accept and hold packages for hikers as they are passing through.

It is all part of “trail magic.”

Trail mail – As the name suggests is a series of emails exchanged on a single topic. The whole trail of emails can be seen by any of the recipients of the email. This is used in the context of emails which are being replied to or being forwarded. The earlier communication remains in the email as part of the reply or forward. Trail mail refers to the earlier mail content.
