Sounds like you may have a hole in your ear drum. My mom had a friend who went to the doctor and told him she thought the same. He just laughed at her lightly and said “yeah right” she then, irritated, placed her fingers over her nostrils and pinched them shut and proceeded to try to exhale through her nose and he could hear air coming out of her ear. It shocked him but he checked and sure enough…she had a hole.

Your ears and throat are connected through structures called Eustation tubes. They allow for the equalization of pressure, that’s why yawning on a plane will help fix your ears if they’ve popped. Yawning puts your jaw in such a position that it opens those tubes and thus equalizes the air pressure inside and outside of your ear, providing relief from the discomfort of popped ears. Sometimes if you’re sick with a head cold, you can actually feel where they are in your throat, near your tonsils on both sides.

You may actually have a pierced or ruptured eardrum, and a small amount of air may be flowing through your ear canal. Stresses like diving into the water may sometimes rupture an eardrum. You can have this checked out by an ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) specialist MD.

Oh my goodness, I deal with the same thing. I get frequent nasal infections from allergies and every time my nose if congested I have this problem…it’s not painful but when I tell you it drives me crazy, I mean it drives me absolutely insane! I’ll have to continuously pop my eardrums just for a few moments of relief from it. Hope you don’t have to deal with it to much longer either

This is actually not a bad sign. It simply indicates that your eustachian tubes are open. It feels cold because air is circulating around your inner ear.

Could be that you have perforated eardrums – close your mouth and pinch your nose – if you can still breathe there is one or two holes – and your hearing will be impaired. Have it checked at your ENT-doctor’s. Best wishes.

Mind the eustachian tube is normally only open when we yawn, swallow or smile.
